Register for Massachusetts “Do Not Call” Program

Citizens Police Academy

“The Hingham Citizens Police Alumni Association shall exist to advance the partnership between the Community and the Police Department.”

The Hingham Police Dept. was the first in Plymouth County to offer a citizen police academy. On May 7th 1996 the first class of twelve citizens was introduced to the world of the police officer. The creation of this police academy completed another goal for Chief Joachim-Ingo Borowski in his effort to bring community policing to the town of Hingham. The overwhelming interest and enthusiasm shown by our students has made this a truly rewarding experience for all involved.

The department under Chief Steven D Carlson has continued to build on the success of the program. There have been many changes in law enforcement and in the world since the first class in 1996. The program has adapted to these changes and attempted to provide more hands on activities for the students. In March of 2007, we completed our first offsite Citizens Police Academy. We had the pleasure to present the program to residents of Erickson Retirement Community at Linden Ponds.  It was a great success and we look forward to continuing with this partnership.

Twenty-one ten week sessions have been completed, with class every Wednesday night, meeting from 6:30 to 9:30pm with a short break for refreshments in the middle. Topics range from domestic violence, motor vehicle law enforcement, use of force, drug investigations and gangs, to crime prevention and constitutional law. Students are given an opportunity to test the breathalyzer on O.U.I. enforcement night (always interesting) , be the jury in a Mock Trial at the Hingham District Court,  and a tour of the Plymouth County House of Corrections is also arranged as a field trip. New to the program is a Saturday class where the students work hands on with the Hingham Fire Department at a mock accident scene. After touring the Ambulance and Fire Engine the Citizens Police Alumni  has been busy at the grill preparing food for lunch. After lunch the students become a detective and investigate a mock crime scene. Perhaps the highlight of the ten weeks however, is the opportunity each student gets to ride along with one of our officers. This gives the student the chance to feel a little bit of what an officer feels as he or she goes on patrol and also a chance to see some of the things she/he has learned put to practical application.
