Hingham, MA - An 84 year old resident fell victim to a lottery phone scam in which he lost $24,000.
On July 20, 2023 the resident reported the scam to police. The resident said he began receiving calls in June that he had won a million dollars and needed to pay the taxes before he could receive his winnings. Over the course of several phones calls the caller asked the resident to send several checks which would be "sent to the IRS". After several checks were sent and cashed, the caller told the resident his winnings had increased to 2.5 million and more checks were sent.
A total of $24,000 was mailed to the scammers through 9-10 checks that were sent overnight delivery to New York.
