Hingham, MA - A 79 year old resident fell partially victim to a scam in which she almost lost $12,000 but became suspicious and stopped the transaction.
On December 18, 2023 a resident reported she received an unsolicited fake email from "Netflix" that instructed her to pay a $12,000 bill. She responded to the email and logged onto the portal link they sent her. She then allowed "Netflix" to log onto her bank account. The scammer then transferred the $12,000 from her saving account into her checking account. The scammer told her she needed to go to the bank and withdraw that money. Typically, after the money is withdrawn, the scammer would then give additional instructions on where to send the money.
Fortunately, as the woman was headed out to the bank, she had second thoughts and called her bank to report the incident. The bank immediately froze her accounts.
